How to calculate Zakat

  • Add up your gold, silver, cash, bank balances, business stock, money owed to you and investments.
  • Subtract debts and bills that are due now.
  • If the result is at or above the Nisab, and you have held it for a lunar year, pay 2.5% of it as Zakat.

This calculator is for guidance. For complex cases such as business partnerships or pensions, consult a qualified scholar.

Frequently asked questions

›Zakat kitni banti hai? (How much Zakat do I owe?)

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth once it reaches the Nisab and a lunar year has passed. Enter gold and silver in grams or tola and the calculator does the rest. The same calculator is also available in Urdu.

›What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum wealth a Muslim must own before Zakat becomes due: 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver (7.5 tola gold or 52.5 tola silver). Most scholars recommend the silver Nisab because it is lower and benefits more of the poor.

›How much Zakat do I have to pay?

Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of your net zakatable wealth, if it is above the Nisab and has been in your possession for one full lunar year.

›Is Zakat due on jewellery I wear?

Scholars differ. The Hanafi school says Zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery, including what is worn; others exempt jewellery for personal use. Follow the opinion of your scholar.

›Is Zakat due on my house or car?

No. Zakat is not due on your home, car, furniture or other personal items. It is due on items held for sale in a business.

›Can I deduct debts?

Yes. Debts and bills that are due now can be deducted from your assets before checking the Nisab.
