How the Hijri calendar works

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months. Each month begins when the new crescent moon is sighted, so months last 29 or 30 days and the year is about 354 days long. That is why Ramadan and Eid move roughly 11 days earlier each year in the English calendar.
